What are common types of workplace illnesses?

It's not uncommon for people to be less-than-excited to go into work every day. In fact, we hear people say they are "sick of working" quite frequently. But there are workers who actually do get sick because of their work, and it could be grounds to pursue workers' compensation benefits.

Generally speaking, Ohio employees who suffer from a workplace illness are eligible to receive money through workers' compensation. However, it must first be established and supported that a person's illness has actually been suffered on the job and through the course of his or her employment.

Being sick typically isn't enough to file for workers' compensation. For instance, if a person has a cold or the flu that is going around the office, there may be no way to prove that such a common illness was picked up in the workplace. You will need to be able to show that conditions on the job directly caused or contributed to a medically-diagnosed condition that resulted in damages.

However, there are other types of illnesses that do often qualify as occupational illnesses. Common illnesses that may qualify for workers' compensation include:

  • Mesothelioma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Asthma
  • Lung disease or skin problems stemming from exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Poisoning
  • Loss of hearing
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Frostbite
  • Diseases passed through contact with blood

These illnesses are not automatically categorized as being suffered on the job, but they are among those that are very often linked to conditions on the job.

If you are suffering from one of these illnesses, it is possible that you could be eligible to collect workers' compensation. These benefits can be crucial in helping to cover some of your medical expenses and replace a portion of the wages that have been lost as a result of not being able to work due to illness. Working with an attorney to file a claim for compensation can help you pursue the support you may greatly need.
