What workplace conditions can lead to back injuries?

Having an injured back can significantly impact a person's ability to do certain things. In some cases, it can be a struggle just get out of bed in the morning and for many people, these types of injuries can make it difficult or impossible to perform the functions of their job.

In fact, certain workplace conditions can be a critical factor in the development or worsening of back injuries. Because we spend so much of our time at work, it can be crucial to be aware of what the potential hazards are and what can be done in the event of a back injury.

Generally speaking, there are three common contributors to workplace back injuries on the job.

  • Lifting: Many workers have to lift objects as a part of their job. If these objects are too heavy or a worker is not adequately trained in proper lifting techniques, his or her back can be seriously injured.
  • Uncomfortable positions: In todays work environment, many people are sitting or standing for long periods of time. The combination of poor posture, lack of ergonomic work spaces and awkward positions can put enormous strain on the back and lead to chronic pain or injury.
  • Overexertion: Bodies typically let us know when they are at their breaking points. Whether we are twisting, leaning, lifting, pushing or pulling, there is typically some indication of when we need to stop. If workers continue past this point, the result could be a painful and permanent injury.

Our back muscles and spines are critical parts of much of our movement. If any part of the back is in pain, it can be difficult or impossible to do many tasks we may not even think about on a daily basis. But when an injury is suffered, suddenly everything we do can be accompanied by a dull or sharp pain that reminds us of how much of our movement involves our backs.

In the event that you have suffered a back injury on the job or can no longer perform the duties of your job because of a back injury, it is crucial that you seek medical and legal help. Should you decide to pursue compensation or disability benefits because of an inability to work, it can be necessary to have both in the pursuit of a favorable outcome.
