The importance of eye protection in industrial environments

Working in an industrial environment requires people to observe safety protocols, pay attention and wear appropriate protective gear. Failure to do this could result in a serious workplace accident that puts a person's health and ability to continue working in danger.

One of the more serious injuries that an industrial worker could suffer on the job is an eye injury. Literally in the blink of an eye, a person can's safety can be jeopardized if there is not adequate protection against eye injuries.

There are many ways a person's eyes can be damaged on the job, causing minor to severe vision problems. Any person in an industrial occupation will want to be especially mindful of these hazards, which include:

  • Dust or other small particles in the air
  • Flying objects including sparks, errant nails and other materials
  • Falling objects
  • Chemical burns

In some workplaces, workers are never provided with personal protective equipment like goggles or glasses. Some people receive these items but they might prove to be uncomfortable or cause visibility problems, which encourages workers not to wear them when necessary. Other workers do have adequate eye protection, but still manage to suffer an injury.

No matter what leads to an eye injury, it is important for a worker injured in an industrial accident to seek medical help right away to assess the damage and get treatment. After that, he or she may want to explore their options for compensation. Workers' compensation benefits are typically available for people who are hurt on the job, and there may also be grounds to pursue a negligence or product liability claim as well.
