Ohio steel worker's fall injuries prompt investigation

If you're shopping for metal products, you can find bottom-poured ingots, hot-rolled bars and cold-finished bars about two hours north of Columbus at the Republic Steel mill. The 125-year-old Ohio icon continues to churn out products used the world over.

Though it has made safety strides in recent years, Occupational Safety and Health Administration says Republic must do more to protect industrial workers from on-the-job injuries, especially in dangerous falls. Late last year, OSHA inspected the Lorain plant after a worker there fell about 12 feet and sustained multiple injuries.

The investigation revealed that the steel mill was exposing workers to fall hazards, and was failing to make sure that maintenance workers are not injured by machinery unexpectedly operating during servicing.

OSHA issued citations for the above violations, it said, as well as for violations deemed serious: improper crane operations at the mill and a failure to have chain slings inspected every year.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 200,000 workers were seriously injured in workplace falls in 2009. It's clearly a widespread problem and common hazard.

For those men and women injured on the job in a fall, Ohio workers' compensation is expected and usually needed. It pays the associated medical bills and helps replace wages lost while you're recuperating from your injury. When those benefits are denied, it can put a family in financial crisis.

An experienced Columbus workers' comp attorney can examine your case, help you appeal a denial of benefits and fight to help ensure you get the care and assistance you need and deserve.
