Road construction workers exposed to distracted, impaired drivers

Much of the destruction she left in her wake can never be fixed, never be healed and never be forgotten. The 23-year-old Ohio woman was allegedly under the influence of drugs -- and might have been texting as well -- when she crashed into utility workers in a road construction area.

One worker was killed and four others injured in the crash. The employee killed was just 24 years old when a Chevrolet Cavalier swerved and slammed into a utility truck and then into a group of workers. She died 10 days later of her injuries.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says on its website that "motor vehicles are consistently the leading cause of work-related deaths in the United States." More than a third of all work-related fatalities involved cars, trucks and SUVs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says. In the decade ending in 2012, there were more than 12,000 worker deaths on public highways. More than 3,300 pedestrian workers killed by being struck by vehicles.

In the case mentioned, one worker was killed and four others injured. While we don't know the extent of their injuries, we do know that far too often road construction workers are hurt by impaired motorists and by distracted drivers. In this instance back in April in southwest Ohio, the driver might well have been impaired by marijuana and drugs used to treat anxiety (several pills were found in her vehicle).

In similar cases, pedestrian workers injured by being struck by a vehicle often suffer long-term effects of serious injuries. An experienced Columbus workers' compensation attorney pursues maximum compensation so that the injured get needed medical care and needed wage replacement for as long as they need it.
