Hope collapses

When we first read of an injured worker in a town about an hour and a half southwest of Columbus, we were hopeful. After all, the story of a partial trench collapse last Tuesday began with hopeful news: emergency workers were on the Hillsboro scene within 60 seconds.

Within three minutes, the on-scene commander had called for a medical helicopter. And within four minutes of the chopper's arrival, the 26-year-old man had been freed from the trench, was strapped in to the helicopter and was on his way to a hospital.

Even though rescue efforts appeared to have been swift, the small article in the Hillsboro newspaper had one very ominous note: "The victim was pulseless and not breathing" when pulled from the trench.

A later report dashed all hope. The man had died two days after his arrival at the hospital. The injuries sustained in the 18 minutes he had spent trapped in the trench had proven to be too much.

We wish the best for his grieving family in these difficult days.

We also hope that the tragedy serves as a stark reminder to Ohio workers and employers of the grim dangers in construction trenches.

In some trench collapses, workers are extricated with injuries that can include broken bones, internal organ damage, head injuries and more. In some serious situations, collapse victims suffer traumatic brain injuries and other substantial physical harm.

Unfortunately, serious injuries require expensive medical care. Better than anyone, you know how much you need that care and your wage replacement. It's up to you, however: you can accept the denial of those needed benefits or you appeal the decision with the help of a Columbus attorney committed to fighting for your rights and your compensation.
