OSHA identifies repeat safety violation at Ohio stoneworker

Each industry in Ohio has its own unique set of safety hazards from which workers must be protected. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently completed a follow-up inspection at a facility at which granite and marble are processed. The inspection followed allegations that were made in February about a safety violation that was also identified at this business in 2012.

This industry is especially dangerous to the hearing and respiratory systems of the workers and require appropriate protection. OSHA inspectors determined that no precautions were in place to protect the hearing of employees, nor were any training provided about noise protection. Workers were also allowed to operate and repair unguarded machines that lacked energy control devices to prevent unintentional startups.

Furthermore, the company seemed to disregard the dangers posed by silica dust, which is a byproduct of stonework. It can cause silicosis, which is an occupational lung disease that is caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust. The dust produced at such facilities is a known respiratory hazard that can even cause cancer.

Any victim of a safety violation at a workplace may suffer severe financial difficulties, particularly if a long-term illness was caused by an unsafe work environment. Benefits claims may be filed through the Ohio workers' compensation insurance system that will provide compensation for medical expenses and lost income. In some cases, workplace illnesses like silicosis are not immediately evident and claiming benefits may be difficult. For this reason, some victims choose to utilize the services of an experienced workers' compensation attorney to assist them with the administrative and legal proceedings.
