OSHA to determine whether fatal fall followed safety violation

An employee of an Ohio-based industrial cleaning company lost his life in a recent workplace accident in another state. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation to determine whether the fatality resulted from a safety violation. The deceased worker was part of a contracted crew cleaning a silo at a power plant.

Police responded to an emergency call at about 8 a.m. on a recent Tuesday. A preliminary report indicates that the worker died after falling from a roof. Investigators will look at the reason for the man's presence on the roof covering the boiler area because it was not part of the assigned area for the cleanup.

Reportedly, the company employed the victim of this fatal fall incident less than six months ago. OSHA revealed that the industrial cleaning company had been the subject of eight investigations since 2012. All these inspections followed safety-related complaints, and records show that three investigations involved falls. Both the Police and OSHA are investigating the incident.

Regardless of whether a safety violation caused this man's death, his surviving family members will be entitled to seek financial relief through the workers' compensation insurance program. The fact that he died in another state on a contracting job as an employee of an Ohio company might complicate the claims process. However, with the support and guidance of an experienced workers' compensation attorney, they can file a claim for death benefits that may cover the costs of as funeral and burial along with a percentage of lost income.
