What is a repetitive stress injury?

If you are unable to work because of a repetitive stress injury, you may wonder what the term repetitive stress injury refers to and what your options may be if you are suffering from one. Repetitive stress injuries can include tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and bursitis which can all be debilitating and painful injuries to suffer from and can be challenging to treat.

Repetitive stress injuries refer to injuries associated with the nerves, muscles, tendons and bones of the hands. One common type of repetitive stress injury is tendonitis which refers to an inflammation of the tendons in the hand. The tendons in the hands connect muscles to bones and can become inflamed or injured with repetitive movements, causing tendonitis. The signs and symptoms of a repetitive stress injuries can include pain, stiffness, weakness, swelling, tingling, numbness and sensitivity to cold or heat.

Repetitive stress injuries can make performing certain types of work difficult and may mean the worker is unable to do their job. It can be important to treat repetitive stress injuries early on so early signs should not be ignored and medical treatment should be sought whenever necessary. In addition, if the worker is experiencing any loss of function, it should be treated seriously. In addition to medical treatment, it can also be important to modify techniques at work and may be necessary for the worker to change their activities and how they conduct their job. RSI can be related to work at a computer but even construction workers may experience RSI associated with the repeated vibration of machinery and tools they work with.

Regardless of the industry the worker is in, if they are suffering from a repeated stress injury it can be a challenging situation to deal with. Fortunately, workers' compensation options may be available to help workers with the medical expenses and lost wages they experience while trying to cope with a repetitive stress injury on the job.
