Injured workers need to understand the workers' comp process

There are steps in the workers' compensation process that need to be followed for injured workers to receive the benefits they need which is why it is important for injured workers to be familiar with the workers' compensation process. Workers should always be generally familiar with workers' compensation protections and how they can help them.

The workers' compensation process begins with the injured working reporting their injury to their employer. Injured workers are typically required to report their injury to their employer in writing. There are also timelines associated with reporting an injury to an employer. The employer should provide them with a claim form that they will need to fill out to receive workers' compensation benefits.

Because they will need to provide their medical records, injured workers should ensure they keep detailed and organized records of the medical care and treatment they receive. Injured workers will likely need to provide information related to the medical treatment they have received; the type of injury they suffered and what parts of their body were affected; where and when the workplace accident occurred; how the accident occurred; and the parties involved in the accident.

It is important to keep in mind that workers' compensation rules and requirements and timelines can vary by state so injured workers and their families need to be familiar with the requirements in their state. Most importantly, injured workers and their families need to be aware of the ways workers' compensation benefits can help them with their medical expenses, lost wages and otherwise.
