Protections for workers facing occupational illness

Discussions of workers' compensation often focus on falls and other accidents, but workers' compensation benefits can help people who have been injured on the job in many ways, including through exposure to dangerous chemicals. In some cases, the benefits can help people who have developed long-term illnesses after exposure to toxic materials.

Toxic exposure in the workplace can be as serious as any other type of workplace accident and in many instances can occur in the context of an industrial worker accident if there has been a chemical spill or similar incident. Unfortunately, everyday in the United States workers suffer from toxic exposure in their workplaces which can lead to a workplace illness and an inability to work or even death. It is important that workers who have had their health compromised at work be prepared for what to do and familiar with how workers' compensation benefits can help them.

As this blog recently discussed, workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace and employers are required to inform them about toxins in the workplace. There are procedures that should be followed if toxic exposure is present in the workplace. If a worker has been exposed to a toxin in their workplace, it is important that they seek medical attention. It is also important that they be aware that workers' compensation benefits can help with their medical expenses, lost wages and some other types of concerns as well depending on the circumstances.

Workers should be able to go to work each day confident that they will be kept safe in their workplaces. When this turns out not to be the case, it is essential that they are familiar with the resources and protections available to them to help them get well and with their everyday needs while they cannot work.
